A Season – by – Season Guide for West Michigan Seniors
One of the top questions we get from students and parents is: When do you take senior pictures? It’s a great question, and the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best time to take senior pictures depends on your style, schedule, and your yearbook deadline. Whether you’re attending Ionia High School, Portland, Belding, Lowell, or any other school, knowing what to expect from each season can help you decide when to take senior pics.
Here’s a breakdown by season to help you plan:
Summer (June – August)
Pros:
- Longer days = more flexible session times (especially great for golden hour)
- Beautiful wildflowers and lush greenery
- Free from school commitments: easier to plan around vacations and jobs
- Perfect for early yearbook photo submissions
- Warm, glowing sunsets and colorful skies
Cons:
- Hot, humid days (think shiny skin and frizzy hair!)
- Mosquitoes and bugs in outdoor settings
- Can feel rushed if you’re juggling vacations, camps, or work
- Popular season = limited availability if you wait too long to book
- Earlier sessions may be needed if it’s very hot by evening
Tip: Book 2–3 months in advance! Most seniors choose this season, especially if they want their session completed before fall sports start.

Fall (September – early November)
Pros:
- Gorgeous fall foliage—reds, oranges, and golds everywhere
- Great for cozy layers, flannels, boots, and earth-toned outfits
- Softer light for natural, flattering photos
- Still time for yearbook deadlines at most schools
- Cooler temps mean no sweating through your outfit!
Cons:
- Days get shorter quickly = earlier session start times (especially after Daylight Saving ends)
- Fall sports and school events can crowd your schedule
- Weather can be unpredictable (rainy, windy, etc.)
- Highly requested season—dates go fast!
Tip: Book as early as late spring to snag a fall date. Don’t forget to bring an extra layer in case it cools down quickly during your shoot.

Winter (Late November – February)
Pros:
- Magical snow-covered backdrops
- Unique, dreamy look. Your photos will stand out!
- Cozy wardrobe options like scarves, coats, and boots
- Less competition for dates = easier to schedule
- Unique studio sessions are more available during this time
Cons:
- Cold temps mean sessions are shorter or broken into parts
- Limited outdoor session time due to daylight
- Risk of snowstorms or cancellations
- Tougher on hair/makeup prep in freezing weather
- Not ideal for yearbook deadlines unless your school accepts later submissions
Tip: Plan a backup date and bring hand warmers! Winter is a great choice for creative seniors who want a bold, editorial look.

Spring (March – May)
Pros:
- Fresh blossoms and greenery = soft, pastel backgrounds
- Great light for skin tones and a fresh, youthful feel
- Often overlooked—easier to book!
- Perfect for last-minute seniors who need photos before graduation
- Also a great time for studio portraits
Cons:
- Rain, mud, and allergy season can be tricky
- School gets busier with sports, testing, and prom prep
- Earlier sunsets in March/April = tighter time windows
- Limited time if yearbook deadlines have passed
Tip: Choose locations with spring flowers or flowering trees. Be flexible with dates in case of reschedules due to rain.

So, When Are Senior Pictures Taken?
Most seniors in West Michigan schedule their photos between June and October. That window gives you the best chance to meet high school yearbook deadlines, beat the rush, and avoid schedule conflicts. But no matter the month or season, the most important thing is to pick a time that works best for YOU.
Take your school activities, vacations, sports, and part-time jobs into account when planning. And don’t forget to consider the timing of your session, getting dark earlier, hair and makeup prep, and travel time can all impact the day-of schedule. So, when is the best time to take senior pictures for you?
